Paul Jorgensen takes over the Alimoe
HARLEM, NY - On Friday evening, NYC basketball fans of the beloved street ball legend Tyron "Alimoe" Evans would pay tribute with the 1st Annual Alimoe's Memorial Basketball Game played at 145th street and Lenox avenue, in Harlem, NY.
Evans turned-out courts throughout Harlem and beyond, especially during the AND 1 mixtape tour era in 1990-2000's earning the nickname "The Black Widow". He would suddenly pass away this past February due to complications from diabetes.
The game would bring out the best in NYC High School basketball to play on the NYC asphalt. Team Alimoe, coached by Kenneth Gucc Robinson, was led by Paul Jorgensen (16 points), Bashir Ahmed, Taquan Givens, Mustafa Jones, Leroy Fludd, Joshua Doughty, Larry Beckett, Randy Corporan, Wesley Myers, , and Elijah Davis.
Team Black Widow coached by Debo Johnson and Isaac Gary were led by Isaiah Whitehead (15 points), Kody Jenkins, Kentrell Brooks, Jordan Washington, Jon Severe, Desi Rodriguez, Cisco Infante, Baron Freeman, Jaquan, Brown, Carlos Galan, Nate Williams, Shammgod Wells, Chris Robinson and Meliek Thomas.
The anticipated match-up of the game was Whitehead vs. Ahmed, but it would be little known stand-out player, Jorgensen who would steal the show en route to a 76-63 victory for Team Alimoe.
The game would be played in typical all-star man-to-man fashion but once Jorgensen, who plays his AAU basketball with New Heights, hit the asphalt, the momentum would change. The 6-2 guard's handle, ankle breakers, jumpshots and drives to the basket would have the crowd jumping out of their seats and eventually onto the court.
In the words of event organizer Antonio "Mousey" Carela, "The Crowd for Alimoe day looked like [a scene from the movie] Project X!"
