3-star DE switches commitment to Tulsa

Recent movement within Tulsa's 2013 commitment list allowed one local prospect another chance at becoming a Golden Hurricane. On Friday, Broken Arrow (Okla.) defensive end Frankie Davis switched his commitment to Tulsa.

"Well, the ultimate decision was mainly family and proximity to home," he told InsideTulsaSports.com on Friday night. "I have a large bit of family that lives in Tulsa, and they really want to see me play, so I'm blessed the opportunity came back around for me, and I chose the Golden Hurricane."

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound three-star prospect was previously committed to New Mexico and also held scholarship offers from Memphis, Colorado State, Arkansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, Wyoming and Western Kentucky.

As we reported on Tuesday, Tulsa lost a commitment earlier in the week when St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet defensive end Donnie White Jr. reopened his recruiting process. That opened a spot for Davis, who had originally missed an opportunity with TU because they were full at his position.

Davis now gets a chance to play with several other highly rated in-state prospects that have committed to Tulsa.

"That means a lot," he explained. "Playing against those guys, you always had to, I guess, hate them. But now that we're on the same team, it's going to be a great experience. Competing in practice and drills with great players from high school will just raise the level of competition and make us better as players and eventually better as a team. It will be perfect for both sides I believe."

Broken Arrow finished 8-4 this season, and Davis picked up first-team all-metro honors after collecting 82 tackles and five sacks.

"I definitely thought (the season) could have ended better as a team, but personally as a player, I had a pretty productive year and did what I could to help the team," he said. "I mainly just wanted to get better, and I believe I did because the game felt a lot slower than it did when I was a junior.

"My strengths as a player on the field, I believe, are being the smartest player on the field and knowing how to attack the football."

Tulsa currently has 19 verbal commitments in the 2013 class, including 10 from the state of Oklahoma.
