Beavers Land 3-star JUCO Corner
Oregon State has been working the junior college ranks for a number of solid athletes that can jump in and contribute right away. They landed one of the better corner prospects from the Northern California JUCO ranks on Wednesday, outdueling some of the most prestigious programs in the country.
College of the Sequoias corner Steven Nelson was a wanted ma for most of the season, but took his name off the board early on when he gave a verbal commitment to Georgia in February. However, after a trip to Oregon State in October, Nelson started having second thoughts and opted to back out of his commitment to the Bulldogs. On Wednesday, he decided to make it official with the Beavers.
"My #1 is Oregon State," Nelson said. "I gave them a verbal commitment. Signing day is next week so I won't be taking any more visits."
Nelson is 6-foot, 190 pounds and fast with a reported 40-time in the 4.4 range. He says Oregon State has a lot to offer for his future.
"I felt like it was the best fit for me," Nelson said. "Rod Perry is a great coach and I feel like he can prepare me for the next level."
Nelson says he will arrive in Corvallis right after the calendar change.
"I leave on January 4," Nelson said.
Nelson says it is a relief to finally have the process completed.
"Me being an older guy and not in high school, it was kind of fun at first, but when it came to crunch time it was kind of stressful," Nelson said. "It's a relief to have everything over with. It has been a journey. I finished my classes today with a 3.2 GPA."
Nelson finished the season with 21 tackles, three interceptions and four pass break-ups for the Giants, earning All-Valley Conference honors after the season. He graduated from Northside High School (GA) in 2011, and will arrive at Oregon State with three years left to play two years of football for the Beavers.
