Desper wants to get the Jaguars back on track

Madison Central (Miss.) is not used to losing.

The Jaguars led by veteran head coach Bobby Hall have went a combined 37-5 over the past three seasons. But Madison Central and center Devon Desper, a Mississippi State commitment, are in an unfamiliar spot after beginning the season 0-2.

The Jaguars dropped their season opener 28-24 at home to Olive Branch and lost another heartbreaker 16-14 on the road at Starkville last week.

But Desper believes his team is just a few plays away from getting back on track to where they were last season when they finished 12-2 and reached the Class 6A North Half Championship.

"We aren't far from being there," Desper said. "There are just a couple of plays that we are not making that we have to execute better. We're not far from being pretty good."

As one of the Jaguars senior leaders, Desper is working to keep the team morale up for some of the younger players to push through the early season adversity.

"You've just got to keep playing," Desper said. "We're 0-2 but we've still got a bunch of games to play. What has happened has already happened. Both of those games are over with and we've got to get ready for Petal."

Madison Central takes on Petal (1-1) and four-star quarterback Anthony Alford tonight at home.

The 6-foot-4, 285-pounder feels blessed just to be back on the field. He missed most of the 2010 season with a broken leg but feels no affects from the injury.

"It feels great just to be out there," Desper said.

The two-star prospect is rated the No. 24 recruit in the state of Mississippi.
