EliteHoopsShowcase Houston recap
HOUSTON, TX - The EliteHoopsShowcase has been a national launch pad to quite a few players out of the Houston camp over the past three years. In year one it was D'Angelo Harrison (St. Johns University), Rasheed Sulaimon, then a freshman committed to Duke and probable McDonalds All-American, Joe Burton and Mavin Saunders (Both Adidas Nations). In year two it was 2014 wing Justin Jackson, Malik Morgan,Daryl Milburn, Danuel House, Josh Gray...all nationally ranked players, among others.
This year that distinction goes to 6-foot-8 WF Johnathan Motley out of Northshore HS in Houson, 6-foot-5 2014 lefty wing, Kelly Oubre out of Fort Bend Bush in Houston and 2013 PG DJ Griggs out of Brazosport HS in Lake Jackson, TX . Motley is a long WF with a variety of skills reminiscent of Baylor's Quincy Miller. Motley can beat you off the dribble, has the ability to knock down jumpers and is skilled on the block. On the defensive end he did a good job of blocking and altering shots. Look for Motley to crack the Rivals Top 150 in Tuesday's 2013 Rankings update.
6-foot-5 2014 WG Kelly Oubre (Fort Bend Bush - Houston, TX) is a smooth, slashing lefty wing who effectively uses his hesitation dribble to get to the basket for finishes at the rim. His ability to hit the perimeter shot also opens up his driving lanes. His game is not one-sided as he battled on both back-boards and defended well. Oubre has a UCONN and Texas A&M offer and is hearing from Marquette, North Carolina, Baylor and Texas among others.
6-foot-2 2013 PG D.J. Griggs is a physical point guard who finishes well with contact and knows how to setup his teammates. His quick first step and strength allows him to beat his man to the lane. Griggs, a tough defender, also is one of the better rebounders at his position. The work he's putting in has payed dividends, look for Griggs to debut in the Rivals 2103 rankings Tuesday as well.
6-foot-1 2012 PG Josh Gray (Christian Life Center - Houston, TX) - Gray, a Mississippi State pledge, jumped on the scene at last years camp and his continued improvement is evident. 5-foot-9 2013 PG Shawndre Jones (Fort Bend Bush - Houston, TX) - Jones is very good at using high ball screens to create scoring opportunities for himself and others. Very effective with the catch-and-go in the half court set to beat his man. Good on the ball defender. Minnefield has a chance to play at the high major level. He is already hearing from Florida state, Kansas, Texas and San Fran. among others.
