Waco Midway Cruises to Homecoming Win
HEWITT- Often times during homecoming week coaches worry about off field distractions, but there were no such concerns for Midway (4-0) who used a dominating defensive performance to coast to a 29-6 homecoming win over Everman (1-2) on Friday night at Panther Stadium.
Midway's dominant front four led by Baylor verbal pledge Beau Blackshear controlled the line of scrimmage all evening and prevented any trademark big plays from the Everman offense. They were also able to harass Everman's quarterbacks into several poor throws, as Everman did not complete a pass on the evening.
It was the Midway defense that made the game's first big play as on the first play from scrimmage senior defensive back Myrlon Edwards recovered an Everman fumble setting Midway up deep in Everman territory . Six plays later Blackshear came in on offense and scored from a yard out putting Midway up 7-0.
After stopping Everman on a 4th and 2 at their own 33, Midway moved 63 yards to the Everman four yard line but were forced to settle for a 21 yard field goal by Kevin Potts to expand the lead to 10-0. Everman's defense made some adjustments in the second quarter and controlled the field position battle, but the offense was unable to take advantage and the score remained 10-0 at the half.
Midway appeared poised to turn the game into a rout as on the opening drive of the second half they moved right down the field as Blackshear scored on a one yard run making it 16-0 as the point after attempt failed. The key play on the march was a 35 yard pass from Ryan Smith to Kevin Thomas just one play after Midway converted 3rd and 8 in Everman territory.
The lone score for Everman came in the third quarter as the lead was cut to 16-6 when freshman running back Terrence Cook scored on a four yard run. Midway would not let Everman get any closer as late in the third they were able to eliminate any Everman comeback hopes with Ronnie Lee scoring on a twelve yard pass from Smith to expand the lead to 23-6.
Midway would add a late score for good measure with sophomore B.J. Kelly scoring from twelve yards out for the final tally of 29-6. Kelly would lead all rushers with 157 yards on 22 carries. Cory Franklin led the Everman ground game with 113 yards on 19 carries, TCU commit James Bailey left the game in the third quarter with an undisclosed injury. Bailey ran for 66 yards on seven carries.
Everman which is off to their first 1-2 start since 2006 will open District 7-4A play next week at home against Crowley, while unbeaten Midway will visit Austin Bowie to close out the non-district portion of their schedule.
