Section Sports Stars of the Week
Kelsey Young piled up 297 yards and three touchdowns against Crenshaw, earning the Athlete of the Week award for the Inland Southern California region. The Stanford commit was unstoppable early on, breaking a 71-yard touchdown run on Norco's second play of the game and a 73-yard touchdown on the first play of Norco's second possession.Norco running back
Young's long runs helped Norco jumped out to a 12-7 lead but Crenshaw took a 21-12 lead into halftime. Following a scoreless third quarter, Norco scored a rare passing touchdown to close the gap. Young's final touchdown was a 37-yard run that gave the home team the lead.
Norco's victory avenged a 47-44 loss at Crenshaw last season and gives them a 3-1 edge in the series. Young will be back in action on Friday as the Cougars go on the road to face winless Etiwanda.
McClymonds quarterback Eddie Heard is the Section Sports Athlete of the Week for Northern California. Heard completed 12 of his 18 passes totaling 261 yards and three touchdowns in the Warriors' 26-21 upset victory at Pittsburg.
The 6-foot-4 junior took initiative early in the game, leading McClymonds on a five-play, 63-yard drive to take an early 6-0 lead. Pittsburg surged back and held a 21-12 lead with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Heard sparked a Warriors' comeback, connecting with Marcus Peters for an 80-yard touchdown that closed the gap to 21-20.
The Pirates fumbled the ball away on their next possession, giving McClymonds one more chance. Heard showed poise on the 61-yard drive, converting on a fourth-and-long and then finding Peters in the end zone again to complete the upset of last year's North Coast Section Division I finalists.
Coastal Southern California
Oceanside quarterback Tofi Pao Pao showed tremendous poise in the Pirates' 21-14 win over defending Inland Division champion Chaparral. Pao Pao is the Section Sports Athlete of the Week for the Coastal Southern California region. He was intercepted four times and lost a fumble a week earlier as Oceanside was trampled by Servite; the harsh experience did not seem to faze the 6-foot-1, 205-pound sophomore, who passed for 224 yards and two touchdowns against the Pumas.
The win over Chaparral preserves Oceanside's hopes for the third state title game berth but the Pirates still have tough games against Mira Mesa and Vista before they get into league play.
Liberty Christian running back Sam Salgado is the Small Schools Athlete of the Week. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound senior rushed for 284 yards on 24 attempts in Liberty's 54-36 road win at Valley Christian Academy in Santa Maria. The Minutemen, who have not reached the postseason since 2005, upset last season's Coast Valley League champions with a flurry of offense. Salgado accounted for five of Liberty Christian's touchdowns, scoring four times on the ground and hauling in a 26-yard pass from quarterback Frank Guzman for the first Minutemen touchdown.
Salgado also contributed seven tackles and an interception on defense for Liberty Christian, which travels to La Verne to face Calvary Baptist on Saturday.
