Updated Class of 2011 Football Prospect Rankings

The September edition of the VirginiaPreps.com Top 100 Class of 2011 football prospects is now online.

To no one's surprise, Hermitage linebacker Curtis Grant remains atop the rankings. Grant, who is ranked the ninth best prospect in the country by Rivals.com, has approximately two dozen D-I offers.

There was little change in our top ten which was last "sorted" this past spring. Demetrious Nicholson, a defensive back from Bayside and Landon Turner, an offensive lineman from Harrisonburg who recently committed to North Carolina, switched positions with Nicholson moving up to number three and Turner "falling" to number four.

Movers and Shakers

For those players that were previously ranked in the Top 100, the biggest "Movers", those that moved up at least 20 spots in the rankings include "athlete" Kerry Spellman, from Indian River. The 5-foot-9 Spellman holds two offers but continues to be somewhat of a "sleeper" but moved up a total 34 slots from number 99 to our 65th ranked prospect.

Jerrell Jordan, who plays for the defending state D-1 champion Altavista Colonels moved up from number 94 to number 73 and is still looking to add to his lone offer from the Liberty University.

Another prospect on the move that is no longer looking for offers is Chancellor offensive lineman Sam Marshall. Recently Marshall made a verbal commitment to Duke. At 6-foot-8 and 250 pounds Marshall had a number of other offers including one from Virginia. He moves up to number 25 in our latest rankings, a jump of 20 spots from number 45.

Thompson Brown also moved up 20 spots, rising to number 34. Unlike Marshall, Brown did not spurn the Cavaliers, as earlier this summer he gave Mike London and UVa a verbal commitment. Brown was injured much of last season, which hindered his earlier rankings but has recovered and at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds looks to play defense when he arrives in Charlottesville next fall.

Newcomers

There are nine newcomers to our August ranking and the prospect making the biggest debut is Liberty Christian Academy wide receiver Demetri Knowles. The 6-foot-1, 175 pound wide receiver who comes in at number 44. hails from the Bahamas and lists an offer from Virginia. He may give the Cavaliers a commitment after his parents visit Charlottesville later this fall.

Another prospect making his first appearance in our Top 100 ranking has already decided on his college destination. Josh Woodrum a 6-foot-3 quarterback from Cave Spring High School in Roanoke is ranked number 49. Woodrum gave a verbal commitment to Liberty University earlier this year and despite a recent offer from Wake Forest has reaffirmed his allegiance to the Flames.

Domonique Lennon, a 6-foot-2 187 pound "athlete" is another "first timer" to our rankings. Lennon, who like Knowles plays for a private school, and rotates among several positions for Nansemond Suffolk Academy. In fact led NSA to the VIS Division 2 state title a year ago. East Carolina must like what they have seen in Lennon, as he accepted a scholarship offer from the Pirates earlier this year.

Other newcomers to our Top 100 include: George Riddick, a two way lineman from Kings Fork at number 71, Nagee Jackson a running back from Battlefield at number 93, Derek Brinkley a defensive lineman from Bath County at number 94, Robert Clanagan a linebacker from Stonewall Jackson (Manassas) at number 96, Michael Wyche a defensive lineman from Oscar Smith at number 98 and Ted Kefalas and offensive lineman from Mills Godwin at number 99.

Another Chance

VirginiaPreps.com will be revising its rankings again following the season, so there will be plenty of opportunities for prospects to rise (and fall) before the final rankings are released.
