Spartans offer In-State DT

Michigan State Head Coach Mark Dantonio is making the defensive line a top priority for the class of 2010. Last week they score big at the defensive end position with commitments from William Gholston and Taylor Calero. This week they offered a local defensive tackle in Carl Davis of Sterling Heights Stevenson High School. The 300-pound prospect could be just what the Spartans need to plug the middle in the tough and tumble Big Ten.

Davis has been seeing his recruiting stock rise the past few weeks and on Saturday the Spartans got a chance to evaluate Davis personally at the Offensive/Defensive Line Camp. It did not take Davis long to find out how well he performed on Saturday as earlier today he received a scholarship from Michigan State.

"I talked with my coach and he told me to call up Michigan State. I spoke with Coach Dantonio and he told me they were offering me a scholarship. I also spoke with Coach Gill (position coach) and Coach Enos (primary recruiter)."

So what was it about Davis that the Spartans liked so much?

"They said they liked my quickness and me feet. They said that I can really run for a big man. Coach Gill showed me some stuff on my stance which was good. I haven't spoken with him a lot, but he seems like a good coach and a nice guy."

O what are Davis' feelings about Michigan State?

"I like them. The coaches are real down to earth and I like that. They have nice facilities and an awesome weight room. I didn't see all of the campus, but I guess I will do that when I come back up in July."

July 11th Davis will be back up at Michigan State. Michigan State will be holding a 1-Day Camp then and that will allow Davis to spend more time with his potential position coach and learn more about the Spartan program

The offer from Michigan State pushed Davis' scholarship count to double-digits. Yesterday the Indiana Hoosiers offered. Other teams that have extended a scholarship include Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas and a host of MAC programs. Later this week Davis will head to Columbus to attend a session of Ohio State's Camp.

With a bevy of recent offers, could a decision come soon?

"Right now I plan on making my decision sometime during my season. It feels good to get all these offers and I am real appreciative, but the most important thing to me right now is helping my team win the championship."

Stevenson was 10-2 last year and lost a heart-breaking game in the playoff to Lake Orion on a last second field goal. Davis indicated that the prospects are very good for SHS this fall as the team returns the majority of players from last year's squad.

The Spartan defensive scheme relies on defensive tackles that can play an attacking 3-technique as well as a nose tackle role. A player like Davis, who has the size to play the nose, but the quickness to play the 3-techniqe, could be a good fit for what Coach Dantonio Defensive Coordinator Pat Narduzzi like to do.

SpartanMag.com will continue to follow-up with Davis in the coming weeks.
