Hocutt talks Gillispie situation

Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt met with the media Wednesday following a reception for new Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby.

While the attention would normally be on the television deal the league is expected to formally announce in the coming days or the Champions Bowl alliance between the Big 12 and the SEC, the focus was squarely on embattled men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie.

Hocutt wants to get to the bottom of reports that Gillispie exceeded NCAA-mandated practice limits and was mentally abusive towards his players, members of his staff and prospective employees, but an 8 a.m. meeting Friday that was scheduled the night before had to be postponed after Gillispie was admitted to the hospital earlier that morning.

"We are in an unusual and an unfortunate position," Hocutt said. "But first I want be certainly clear. I could not be more proud to represent and to serve a group of young men and a men's basketball team that I have the privilege of serving each and every day."
