Spartan DB target not in a hurry

One of the players that came to Michigan State's Camp with a scholarship offer was defensive back James Sanford of Xenia High school in Ohio. SpartanMag.com spoke with the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Sanford recently and he gave us the latest information on his recruitment.

Sanford camped at Michigan State back on June 18th when the Spartans held their 1-Day Camp. We asked him about the camp and how he performed.

"The camp went really well, Sanford said. I measured in at 6-foot-1, 180-pound. I ran a 4.57 forty, had a 9'10 inch broad jump and a 6.97 in the L cone drill. I was able to speak with the coaches. They like that I am bi and can come up in run support as well as cover. They see me as an athlete that can play either cornerback or safety."

Sanford indicated that as of right now he still holds the same scholarship offers.
"I have Michigan State, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Ball State, Toledo, Ohio and Bowling Green."

Sanford informed us that as of right now he is not in a hurry to make his decision. He wants to see how things play out as far as scholarships with some of the other schools he is hearing from as well as learn more about his top choices.

"I'm not sure when I will make my choice, I think maybe this fall. It is a big decision so I want to make sure I go to the place that is best for me."

Sanford is being recruited for the Spartan by Coach Harlon Barnett. The fact that Barnett serves as the Spartans secondary coach is a positive aspect in his recruitment.

Michigan State is being very selective at the defensive back position in this class. With 10 scholarships already taken in what looks to be an 18-player class, spots are limited and the staff wants to make sure they are getting the best players at each position. The fact that the staff has not pushed for a commitment from Sanford likely has a lot to do with the fact that Michigan State will be holding another 1-Day Camp on July 11th.

Numerous quality defensive back prospects are expected to be on campus at the next session of camp. The staff wants to make sure they cover all of their bases. Last year players like Arjen Colquhoun and Trae Waynes literally came out of nowhere to become plan A secondary recruits for the Spartan. Those players essentially pushed player with offers like Shaquille Petteway and James Farrow down the list.

SpartanMag.com will be covering the 1-Day Camp the Spartan will be holding on July 11th. We will be sure to keep a close eye on the top defensive back prospects in attendance and report the latest news. How several prospects perform could have a direct impact on a player like Sanford as well as other defensive back recruits such as James White and Jermaine Edmondson.
