Whitehead plans to decide 'soon'

Jermaine Whitehead wrapped up back-to-back visits to Egg Bowl rivals Mississippi State and Ole Miss on Sunday in Oxford.

The comparisons have been made. The sales pitches have been received. All that's left is the decision.

"There are no weaknesses to either school," said Whitehead, a 6-foot, 183-pound four-star cornerback from Greenwood, Miss. "These are SEC top-caliber schools. They all have great things. If there is a weakness with Ole Miss, I just think it's just what they were last year. With Mississippi State, it's the depth. They're a young team with a lot to prove and they're real deep."

The trip to Ole Miss, Whitehead said, "went really well." He was hosted by Ole Miss cornerback Marcus Temple. The Rebels showed Whitehead around Oxford, gave him yet another campus tour and showed him a depth chart that is woefully lacking at the cornerback position.

The Rebels' best selling point, however, might have been the presence of some of the state's top prospects, players Whitehead has gotten to know and grown to respect over the last year.

"It was a great experience," Whitehead said. "Those are some great guys. It's always good to hang with them. They're real cool and real funny. They've got some great characters.

"(The decisions of some of Mississippi's other elite prospects) play a pretty big factor, but at the end of the day, I'm going to do what's best for me and the family."

Before leaving Oxford Sunday, Nutt had a sit-down with Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt.

"(Nutt) told me I've been his guy since day one," Whitehead said. "He said I shocked him by committing early. He at least wanted me to talk with him before I made a decision like that. He told me he wasn't going to quit and he's not going to quit."

Will Nutt get his man?

"I don't really know," Whitehead said. "I'm still kind of in-between right now. It's a toss-up right now. We're going to see real soon."

There was a published report Sunday that said Whitehead would announce a decision Thursday. Whitehead said Sunday he "really didn't want that to get out. I said I was planning on knowing by Thursday or Friday. …I'm going to iron things out. I'm still trying to make sure I make the perfect decision for me. I'll probably just call a coach and let them know I'm coming."
