2011 Houston commits head into the playoffs

A lot of fan bases like to use the state playoffs as a chance to get out and see some of their teams verbal commitments as well as targets in action on a higher level. This year should be no different as the Houston Cougars will be well represented in the playoffs.

CougarsDen will make it easy for you as we break down the where all the commits/targets will be for the playoffs. Today we will start with a break down of the opening round of the playoffs that will see 13 high school verbal commits in action as well as four JUCO commits and lots of targets especially in the 2012 class.

Here is the breakdown:

The Houston Lamar Trio - 2011 verbal commits Bram Kohlhausen, Earl Foster and Kourtlandt Akins led their team to a district championship and a 9-1 record on the season. They face of with a 9-1 Katy Cinco Ranch team Saturday at 1:00 PM at Tully Stadium. If your going to make it out to the game a couple of other names to watch are 2011 SMU running back commit K.C. Nlemchi, 2011 defensive tackle Stuart Mouchantaf and 2013 running back Jamel James for Cinco Ranch as well as 2011 Cal running back commit Darren Ervin, 2011 tight end Imhotep Coleman, 2012 offensive lineman Zach Mafrige and 2012 defensive back Marvin Taylor for Lamar.

The Navarro J.C. Trio - 2011 verbal commits Chevy Bennett, D.J. Hayden and Daniel Campbell and Navarro find themselves in a familiar place in playing next week for the junior college championship. They host Trinity Valley C.C. next Sunday at 3:00 PM at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana. There is a ton of other talented players that will be playing for bigger schools next season, but if you make it out, keep an eye on a pair of Trinity Valley defensive linemen that could very well still come into play for the Cougars in this class. Austin Luke and Brandon Harris both hold offers from the Cougars and could still land a spot in the 2011 class.

Jafus Gaines - The newest member of the 2011 class a recently ranked three star wide receiver saw his Chavez team earn their playoff berth with a win over Westbury Thursday night. The Lobos will face off with Katy Taylor Friday night at 7:00 PM at Rhodes Stadium. Some other names to keep an eye on in the game are 2011 running back Tim Gay and 2013 ATH Demun Mercer who is the younger brother of Gaines and will be a big time recruit in a couple years.

Derrick Mathews - The North Shore Mustangs are in the playoffs which is about as much of a given as the sun rising and setting every day. 2011 linebacker commit Mathews has had a good senior campaign for the Mustangs and leads the team into the first round of the playoffs against Deer Park Friday Night at 7:00 PM at Clyde Abshire Stadium in Deer Park. Instead of listing the many prospects to watch for the Mustangs, if your going to watch the game search them up in the database and get a quick list of who else to watch.

Joey Mbu - The talented big man leads his Richmond Foster team into the opening round of the 2010 playoffs against a tough Friendswood team Thursday night in Angleton at 7:00 PM. Also keep an eye on 2012 athlete Jonathan Johnson and 2012 tight end Trevor Stevens for Friendswood.

C.J. McElroy - The do-it-all McElroy has had a phenomenal senior season and leads Clear Creek into the playoffs against Fort Bend Travis Saturday night at Pasadena Veterans Memorial Stadium at 7:00 PM Others to keep an eye on in the game are 2011 Creek wide receiver Tevin Jones 2012 Creek offensive lineman Brent Wagner, 2011 offensive lineman and SMU commit Carter Wall and 2011 quarterback and Colorado State commit Conner Smith.

Mark Roberts - The West Orange-Stark Mustangs look t continue their roller coaster 2010 season in the payoffs. The Mustangs and Roberts have been impressive since the death of teammate Reggie Garrett earlier in the season and wil face of with Liberty Friday night at 7:30 PM at Lamar University in Beaumont. Keep an eye on 2012 Cougar Targets Justin Thomas who has already been verbally offered, DaCarlos Renfro[db] and 2013 defensive back [db]Collin Janice.

Jaivon Slone - Port Arthur Memorial and Houston commit Slone head into the first round of the playoffs against Pasadena Memorial Saturday at 1:00 PM at Galena Park ISD Stadium. In addition to Slone also keep an eye on 2012 athlete Nathan Holmes.

Daniel Spencer - Spencer and Grandview coasted to the district 6-2A title and a bye in the opening round of the 2A playoffs. With his final offensive explosion of the 2010 regular season, Spencer surpassed the 1,000 yard mark in both rushing and receiving for the year.

Anthony Webb - Anthony Webb and the La Porte Bulldogs open the 2010 playoffs on Friday night at 7:00 PM at Galena Park ISD Stadium against South Houston. There is a lot of talent to keep an eye on in this one. I addition to Webb, keep an eye on For La Porte keep an eye on 2012 targets Aaron Nance-Garrett, linebacker Chad Sutherland and 2013 athlete Hoza Scott. South Houston boasts Longhorn commit Leroy Scott and 2012 targets defensive back Kenneth Marshall and linebacker Ray Dixon.

Matt Wilson - Big offensive lineman Wilson leads his Coldspring team into the opening round of the 3A playoffs against Bridge City Friday night at 7:30 in Huffman.

Jonah Austin - New Orleans St. Augustine offensive lineman Jonah Austin leads his St. Aug team into the playoffs. We are waiting on dates and times for his teams first round game and we will pass it along as soon as it comes in.

Lloyd Allen - Allen leads his 12th ranked Bulldogs into the opening round of the MACJC playoffs. Allen and his teammates face off with Northwest Saturday at 2:00 PM.

Ben Goodman - Goodman who is pretty much the final high school target remaining for the Cougars leads his Beaumont Westbrook team into battle Saturday at 1:00 PM at the Beaumont ISD Thomas Center.

Thats 17 commitments from the 2011 class that are seeing post season action this weekend including 13 high school players and four junior college players. In addition Blinn defensive tackle commit Dominic Smith were in the playoffs but fell Saturday and were knocked out of the playoffs. Thus, 18 of the 19 current commitments will see playoff action
