La. cornerback has leader, sets announcement date
If National Signing Day were today, Floyd Raven knows which national letter-of-intent he would sign.
Of course, it's early July and not early February, so the 6-foot-2, 180-pound cornerback from Reserve (East St. John), La., still has some time to look around and think about his options.
Raven will do just that this weekend when he camps at Texas A&M. However, the Aggies will need to make a really strong impression to catch Raven's leader.
"My coach said it would be a good thing, so I'm going to go out there and see it," Raven said. "Our center, Patrick Lewis, he signed with them (two seasons ago). They've been talking to me on Facebook and telling me I might have a chance to start as a true freshman. I'm just going to check it out."
Raven will arrive in College Station with Ole Miss holding on to a solid lead in the race for Raven's signature. The Rebels landed commitments from Miami, Fla., four-star defensive backs Andrew Johnson (a cornerback) and Gerrod Holliman (a safety) on Independence Day, a development that caught Raven's attention.
"When I saw it, I didn't even know Ole Miss had offered them," Raven said. "I didn't think too much about the situation. It was what it was. They're the only SEC school I've got right now, really."
Raven said he learned of Johnson and Holliman's commitment when four-star Destrehan, La., center Ethan Hutson, who committed to Ole Miss last month, texted Raven.
"I didn't really look at which corners they already had," Raven said. "Whenever I get a chance, I'm going to look at it and see what's up."
Later this month, Raven is going to camp at LSU. The Tigers haven't yet offered, and while "LSU is real happy about me coming in," Raven said, he's not sure if he'll get an offer or not from the home-state team. Raven said he's looking forward to the time in Baton Rouge regardless, primarily because he's excited about facing off against LSU commitment/Dutchtown, La., four-star wide receiver Jarvis Landry.
Raven predicted he'll shut Landry down at LSU's camp, a development that would likely get the Tigers' coaching staff's attention. One way or the other, however, Raven plans to make his decision before East St. John's first game.
"I was going to wait until about two weeks after the LSU camp," Raven said. "Now I'm going to wait until the first day of school (Aug. 16) before I call and verbally commit somewhere."
