Although defensive end Derrick Luetjen embraces the idea of playing college ball with his brother, Matt who is a commit to Army; the junior defensive end wants to ensure that his final choice will be the college and football program that best fits him.
Luetjen indicated that he is excited about his offer from Army, which represents his only offer thus far, but that he is utilizing the summer to make his rounds at various camps with the hope of pulling down a few more offers. "Our team camp is June 2 through June 4th and I'm going to Tulsa camp on June 4th, shares Luetjen in his conversation on May 24th with GBK. "Then I realize it's the last day of my team camp, so I might have to go later.
I also plan on going to the LSU and Kansas camps."
So what other schools are showing interest in the defensive end prospect? "I am hearing that I need to go to the camps to get the offers," Luetjen declares. "That's what I'm hearing from Tulsa and they said they want to see me at their camp. I am hoping to get an offer from Tulsa, OSU and Kansas. I am in more contact with Tulsa versus OSU and Kansas.
And where does Army fit into Luetjen picture? "Spoke to Coach Waugh of Army not too long ago," shares the recruit out of Hennessey (Okla.) Hennessey High School.
"Coach Waugh wanted me to come up for week this summer at Army for the junior week orientation but it conflicts with something I'm doing this summer."
So, who is leading for Luetjen's talents right now? "Tulsa is probably my top school right now and all the others are behind them right now," notes Luetjen, who just completed his outdoor track season where the 6-foot-3 ½ 260 pounder added Class 2A State Champion to his resume. He won in the shot-put with a distance of 49 feet 3 inches.
With his track season complete, Luetjen can now concentrate on his summer camps, recruiting and upcoming senior year.
