Black Knights offer California DE

The Army staff continues to work diligently during the allotted four week window of the April - May evaluation period as they are looking to make their mark on the 2011 recruiting class. The combination of assessing not only the athletic ability of potential recruits, but also the academic credentials has kept Ellerson and his staff extremely busy. Defensive end Charles Burks is one such player that has caught the attention of the Black Knights.

It was two days ago that Army confirmed their level of interest in the Huntington Beach (Ca.) Edison High School prospect when they extended an official offer to Burks.

Coach Saadat officially offered me last night," shared Burks when describing the offer he received from the Black Knights of Tuesday. "He emailed me and my offer letter was attached to the email. "Army is something me and family have been talking about and without a doubt coming from West Point provides you several options once football is over.

West Point is interesting and them being ranked academically is very important to me."

However, the Black Knights will have plenty of competition in the Burks sweepstakes. Just one day after receiving his offer from Army, the Blue Devils of Duke put their hat in the ring.

Also on Burkes' resume are offers from Stanford, San Diego State and Northern Arizona.

Although Burks is receiving tons of attention from West Coast schools, with offers from Army and Duke, is the 6-foot-1, 230 pounds open to the East Coast? "I am open to playing anywhere; where there's the best fit for me, where I can help the team out and get the best education," states Burks who also excels academically, maintains a 3.8 GPA (1650 SAT & 24 on the ACT) and plans on majoring in Business or Psychology.

Burks has seen some action at tight-end at Edison, but he is primarily being recruited on the defensive side of the ball. "I'm being recruiting as defensive end by some schools, linebacker by others and a hybrid defensive/linebacker, where I walk down and rush the ball or drop back," says Burks, who is quick to point out his style of play. "I am relentless and tenacious. I don't feel like I can be stopped when I get out there on the field … I have goal and that's to sack the quarterback or get in the backfield to make the tackle and I'm not going to stop until I do that.

Dwight Freeney is my on the field idol. I love everything that he does on the field, I watched him a lot along with James Harrison."

From the time that he received his first offer on February 28th from Stanford, Burks has remained busy with his unofficial visit itinerary. "I went to their Junior Day when I got my offer and their spring game," declares the California native. "Stanford is very high on my list, I like the coaching staff at Duke and I have talked to Duke about an unofficial visit, I like Oregon State's coaches, UCLA is a local team and they will always be high on my list, but I haven't heard much from them.

But I haven't talked to Coach Saddat yet about visiting but I am sure that will happen soon. He has talked how interested they are in me as player, but also shared with me everything about the school and the football program.

When it comes to camps and combines, Burks plans on attending the Rising Stars camp at USC and also camping at UCLA. will continue to follow Burks throughout his senior year.
