Muniz planning July enrollment at MSU

Houston, Texas offensive tackle Archie Muniz received his first scholarship offer from Mississippi State last summer which was quickly followed by 14 others.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pounder committed to Utah in August and remained with the Utes until taking an official visit to Starkville on Jan. 15. Muniz made the switch a few days later and inked with the Bulldogs on national signing day.

"Everybody asked me what changed my mind," Muniz said. "I just told them that it was more of a family thing. If I wanted to go to Utah then my mom, dad and brother would have to fly in and they probably wouldn't have the money for all that. My mom and dad were at all my games my senior year. From here to Starkville it's probably eight and half hours can they can easily drive that. Just having the support of my family there is a big thing for me."

And Muniz isn't coming to MSU alone. His fraternal twin brother, Ivan Muniz, will also be joining him and will be given the opportunity to walk-on as a safety at 6-foot-2, 185-pounds.

"Our plan all along was to go to a big time university together," Muniz said. "I started to get a couple of offers and he kept waiting and did get a couple of offers from a couple D-II schools and Blinn but he wanted to go D-I. I've been trying really hard to convince coaches and (MSU) said that they really wanted him after they watched his film. He still has to get 100 points on his SAT but he's going to take it again this weekend."

Muniz celebrated on signing day along with several other teammates who also inked Division-I scholarships at Cypress Creek High School.
