2011 DE picks up offer from Black Knights
Hennessey (Okla.) Hennessey High School defensive end Derrick Luetjen is a 6-foot-3, 245 -pounder and could end up as a three-star ranking from Rivals for the Class of 2011.
Luetjen received his first college offer this week from the Black Knights of Army, but is also getting early attention from Iowa State, Louisville, Texas Tech, Duke and Western Michigan.
The Luetjen brothers are close, having grown up together playing on the same youth sports teams and of course most recently on the same high school squad.
Needless to say, the Luetjen family is a tight-knit group and all conversations point to the idea that they will be exploring the possibility of the brothers playing together at the next level, which of course would be Army.
Derrick explained to GoBlackKnights.com the events that unfolded as he received his first college offer and from the school that his brother will be attending
Army, along with his thoughts of playing at the next level alongside his older brother.
"Before he went up for the official visit to Army and Coach Waugh told Matt that he was here to recruit him, and hope that if he didn't mind if he recruited me," shares Derrick. Obviously he said of course
and that would be awesome.
Then my dad sent him the link to my highlights and when he came back down prior to Matt's official visit, we gave him a hard copy and he showed it to Coach Ellerson."
I got a voice mail and it said that he showed Coach Ellerson the highlight and that he loved it. Coach wanted him to call me and offer me a scholarship to Army. I called Coach Waugh back and we chatted some more, but I was just thrilled and couldn't believe it.
So what are your thoughts about the idea of teaming up once again with Matt?
"I am just thrilled that I have the opportunity to play college ball with my brother if I wanted to, but I am going to wait and see what other offers may come
I love the fact that I have the opportunity with Army. I would love the opportunity to go to West Point and I love the comradery."
Derrick finished the season with 9 sacks and 80 tackles, but was just as effective in the classroom where he maintains a 4.0 GPA.
GoBlackKnights.com will continue to follow the recruiting of Luetjen throughout the 2010 season.
