Will Daytona DT visit MSU?

One of the players that Michigan State has been looking at in recent weeks is defensive tackle prospect Kenneth Kirksey of Daytona Beach Mainland High School. SpartanMag.com caught up with the 3-star prospect last night and got the latest on his recruitment.

The 6-foot-, 290-pound Kirksey has been flying below the radar of many teams due to needing to address some academic issues. However, he is in the process of address those concerns and is now taking and scheduling his official visits. Michigan State is one of the taems that Kirksey has been speaking with in recent weeks. SapartanMag.com asked Kirksey about his visits.

"Last weekend I went to Florida International for a visit", Kirksey said. I really liek dit a lot. I also am going to Iowa State on the 22nd. I was going to visit Michigan State this weekend, but I am not going there anymore."

Is there a reason why the Spartans are no longer in the mix?

"I just think it is too far away," he said. "I don't think I want to go that far away from home."

Despite Kirksey indicating that distance is a factor in his decison to not check out Michigan State, he said he still intends on taking his trip to Ames, Iowa on the 22nd.

It could be a case of with the Spartans looking closely at players like Jibreel Black, Bruce Gaston Jr. and Roney Lazono, the level of interest is not as high as it was previously.

Kirksey is still hearing from several other schools such as Rutgers and Louisville, amd he is keeping the weekend of January 29th open just on case he decides to take another official visit. Kirksey intends to make his decision on signing day.

Matt Dorsey's Take:

This one is a bit odd considering Kirksey mentioned distance, but still plan on visiting Iowa State. With that being said, it is possible that the other recruits that are scheduled to visit weekend of the 15th are higher on the list.

Kirksey does have some academic concerns and that is something Michigan State is taking very seriously. Coach Mark Dantonio does not want to take many chances on the academic front and that could be a factor.

SpartanMag.com will be sure to follow-up with Kirksey in the coming weeks. Mid-year grades are usually released in January and that often can help a recruits stock if things are positive. If Kirksey has improved his GPA it is not out of the question that the Spartans will push hard for a January 29th visit. Obviosuly what happens with players like Black, Gaston and Lozano will impact the situation.
