October 15, 2013Richardson (Texas) Berkner point guard Keenan Evans committed to Texas Tech on Tuesday, giving Red Raider head coach Tubby Smith a critical addition to his program's 2014 recruiting class.
Berkner, who TexasHoops.com ranks the No. 23 prospect in Texas, chose the Red Raiders over offers from Colorado, North Texas, Utah State, Western Kentucky, Wichita State and others.
A mid-September visit to the South Plains put Tech in position to land the 6-foot-3, three-star prospect.
"I really liked their facility and their coaches," he said. "When I went for a visit, I got along with the players. I felt as if I could go play with them right now and have good teammwork. I just really liked the campus and the academic center."
The Red Raiders will be graduating eight players off their roster over the next two seasons, so the opportunity is there for Evans to earn significant early playing-time.
"(Smith) told me he really liked my game and I was basically the last piece that he really needed," Evans said. "He really needed someone that can work the one, get people open and run his offense basically."
Evans averaged 8.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game on the AAU circuit this summer.
