July 19, 2013UNC football picked up a huge commitment from Rivals250 prospect Bentley Spain Friday morning.
Tar Heel Illustrated's Adam Powell was on-site covering UNC's "Beast of the Hill" seven-on-seven event when Spain showed up and made his decision in front of the UNC coaching staff and others in attendance.
Spain recently took a trip to Stanford to check out their football program.
The rumor was that it was between UNC and Stanford for Spain's final decision and on Monday the Tar Heels found out the 6-foot-6, 285-pound offensive lineman would be staying in-state.
Spain will be entering his final season of high school football at Providence High School in Charlotte in the next few months.
Spain was a standout performer at June's Fedora's Freak Show.
Adam Powell wrote this about Spain shortly after his performance during that camp event:
"Spain was one of the headliners of the recent Fedora's Freak Show earlier this month in Kenan Stadium, where he was one of, if not the top, offensive lineman in attendance.
Going against a plethora of elite players, including Shy Tuttle, Lorenzo Featherston, Robert Dinkins, and several others, Spain held his own and legitimized his standing as North Carolina's top Class of 2014 offensive tackle.
Measuring and weighing in at 6-5 3/4, 288 pounds, Spain ran 40-yard dashes of 5.39 and 5.37 seconds, along with broad jumps of eight feet even and eight feet, three inches.
Following the Freak Show, Spain and Coach 'Kap spoke together for 15 minutes or more, as the UNC offensive line coach gave the Charlotte standout more details about the Tar Heels while continuing to impress on him that he'll be better off closer to home than going all the way out to California."
Spain had been notoriously quiet about his recruitment but now that it's out in the open that he will be playing his college ball in Chapel Hill, that is a big feather in the cap of a coaching staff that has been collecting commitments at a steady clip for the last month or so.
Tar Heel Illustrated will have more to come on this big announcement as we continue to gather more information.
