Kendrick Roberts offers update on season and recruitiment
The season has night started the way Flint Southwestern wide receiver Kendrick Roberts expected. After finishing a disappointing 0-9 last season, Southwestern has started their 2010 campaign 0-2 with early season losses to Saginaw Arthur Hill and Bay City Western.
"Right now, we just had a bad start," added Roberts. "We've had some issues with our pass protection on offense and then our kickoff coverage, and then we just need to get more aggressive on defense. Opponents have got some easy scores on us and if we change a few things, everything can change."
But despite the tough start, Roberts refuses to lower his preseason expectations.
"My goal is I still want to take my team to playoffs," said Roberts. "Southwestern has never been to playoffs in their history, so that would be quite an accomplishment."
Through two games Roberts has been one of the few bright spots for his team. He has caught 9 passes for 212 yards and returned a 66 yard kickoff for a touchdown in his last game against Bay City Western.
"You know, I'm never really satisfied with my performance. I really didn't get to many receiving opportunities in the last game with some of our pass protection issues, but I think I'm playing up to my expectations so far," Roberts said. "But there is always room for improvement and areas to get better."
While his high school season hasn't started off on the right foot, things are pretty bright from a recruiting perspective for the 6-foot-3 and 185 pound wide receiver. He still holds offers from Central Michigan, Iowa, Toledo and Western Michigan, with programs such as Michigan State and Cincinnati keeping close tabs. He had a chance to visit Central Michigan earlier in the summer for a practice and he maintains the Chippewas are still in the running for him.
"They are still up there pretty high," said Roberts on where CMU stands with him. "I'm still showing them interest, and I actually just talked to Coach (Dan) Enos and Coach (Terry) Samuels the other day before their game. So, CMU is still pretty high up on my list and I'm definitely going to come up for a game this year, I just don't know which one yet."
While the Chippewas are high on his list, Roberts is still a long way from making a decision and he has yet to narrow down his list any.
"I don't really have any set time to make a decision, I'm just kind of waiting for when the right time comes, but I will probably make a decision before my season ends," said Roberts. "But I'm still holding everyone open. I still want to take visits to Iowa and Toledo to see what they have to offer, but I'm happy with the four offers I have right now and they are all in consideration."
Roberts is a three star prospect and ranked as one of the top wide receivers in the Midwest. He and Flint Southwestern will be looking for their first win this season when they take on Midland Dow this upcoming Friday.
