Williams out of shadows and gaining interest
Every year, there are prospects who may get overshadowed by more heralded teammates but eventually emerge as fine players in their own right.
Irving Nimitz junior defensive tackle Damon Williams has played alongside safety Eddrick Loften since both were freshmen. Loften is already shaping up to be one of the top-rated safeties in the class of 2010. In contrast, Williams is coming along more slowly for various reasons, and some observers aren't quite so sure that he won't be a better fit on the defensive side of the ball.
For one thing, Williams weighed 320 pounds last season, but ran a 5.2-second 40-yard dash despite the weight. He also collected three sacks and earned honorable mention All-District honors. However, during the offseason, Williams worked hard and ended up losing 20 pounds to get down to his current weight of 300 pounds. It's made him more effective this season as he has 19 tackles and seven tackles for loss.
The 6-foot-4, 280-pound Williams is gaining interest from Oklahoma, Missouri, Virginia, Kansas State, Kansas, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Arizona State, Kentucky and TCU.
