Tech interested in transfer

Coaches for Texas Tech have asked the Arkansas football program for permission to talk to freshman receiver Damian Williams, who has asked to transfer to another school.

Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said last week he would grant Williams' request.

Williams said Friday he wasn't aware of Texas Tech's interest and hadn't yet talked to any schools. He declined further comment.

Marvin Williams, director of NCAA compliance for Arkansas, said Texas Tech was so far the only school to express interest in taking Williams as a transfer.

Williams, recruited from nearby Springdale High School, which used a pass-based offense to win the state championship in 2005, apparently wasn't happy with his role in the Arkansas scheme, which relies heavily on the ground game.

Calls by RedRaiderSports.com to the Williams household have gone unreturned. But, sources close to Williams indicate that there is a mutual interest in Texas Tech and the Arkansas transfer who would like to be enrolled at his new school next semester.
