Michigan State is very selective when it comes to offering tight end recruits. Earlier this week they decided to pull the trigger and extend a scholarship to Ryan Izzo of Pope John XXIII High School in New Jersey. SpartanMag.com was able to catch-up with the fast rising prospect and get the details on his recruitment.
Izzo is seeing his stock rise significantly and Michigan State sees him as player that can be both an effective pass receiver and blocker in their pro-style scheme. We asked Izzo about his contact with the Spartans.
"Coach Narduzzi stopped by my school earlier this week and he was able to watch me workout. They offered me a scholarship shortly afterwards. I am going to try and get out there for their 1-Day Camp which is on June 16th"
In addition to Michigan State, Izzo also holds scholarship offers from BCS program such as Iowa, Indian, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, USF and Pittsburgh. We fully expect him to make a significant jump up the ribvals.com position rankings when they are update this summer.
As many know the Spartans 1-Day Camp is always loaded with top level talent. It is a great opportunity for players to showcase their skills against other high-level prospect. The past two years the Spartans have received commitments from tight ends after they were able to visit Michigan State and work with the coaches.
Izzo is seeing his stock rise significantly this spring, we asked him about his current scholarship total and his current height and weight.
"I have 12 scholarship offers now and I am 6-foot-6, 220-pounds," he stated.
Izzo obviously still has to get bigger in order to play in the Big Ten, but the Spartans believe he will have no problem adding quality size necessary. It is very likely that he will be close to 240-pounds when he arrives on a college campus next fall and he will more than likely play in the 250-260-pound range.
As far as what he is looking for in a college, Izzo was provided the following.
"I am looking for an offense I fit in, he said. I also want to go to a school with a nice campus and I want to go to a place when I have a good relationship with the coaches. I also want to go to a school where my parents are 100% behind my decision."
Obviously with a last name like Izzo, the mentions to Michigan State will be automatic. Another interesting aspect is that Pope John XXIII high School is located in Sparta, New Jersey. We asked Izzo if he has followed Michigan State in the past.
"Yes, I play both basketball and football so I kind of follow both sports equally. I have been a fan of the Spartans."
SpartanMag.com will continue to keep in contact with Izzo in the coming weeks. We will keep a close eye out for him at the 1-Day Camp.
