TYLER, Texas -- The coaching carousel of the last month has affected recruiting. One of Louisiana Tech's prospects knows this all too well. When a head coach is fired or hired away, recruiting changes dramatically.
Conner Grooms has experienced this recently.
I was being recruited by a lot of schools with recent coaching changes. So, I'm not sure if all my offers still stand," said Grooms.
The only confirmed offers Grooms says he has it Memphis and Tech. Memphis had one of those coaching changes but the new staff has contacted him told him his offer still stands. Right now, Grooms says he favors Tech.
"Between Tech and Memphis, it's Tech," said Grooms. "[Memphis] just called me last night and said I am still on their radar."
Grooms really likes Tech offensive line coach Pete Perot.
"I really like Perot. He's a great guy and great coach," Grooms said.
Grooms is looking forward to just seeing what Ruston, Tech, and the team have to offer him.
"I've never visited Ruston or Tech so I want to see the team, the coaches, the town and school," said Grooms.
Grooms said he does not expect to commit to Tech during his visit.
Playing close to home is not a huge factor for Grooms but says being close to Tyler is not a negative thing.
"It is important to play close to home but not the driving force," said Grooms. But, proximity to Tyler is not a bad thing"
Grooms grew up a Texas Tech fan and respects what Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes father, Spike, did at Texas Tech as head coach and likes what Sonny has done in Ruston.
"Since the Poinsettia Bowl performance I have been very excited," said Grooms. "Sonny Dykes has really turned [Tech's] program around."
Grooms is a offensive lineman who is flexible as he played tackle until his senior year when he began playing center.
"I'm flexible, whatever position and either side of the ball," said Grooms. "Whatever, I just like to play ball."
Although his flexibility is a strength, Grooms says his strength is reading defenses and players.
"My ability to read defenses and players as the game goes on is my strength," said Grooms. "As the game goes on I get better. By the end of the game the guy doesn't have a chance."
Grooms is a full qualifier as he has a 3.2 GPA and 1820 on the SAT.
"There's a high possibility that I'll end up at Tech," said Grooms.
