Army continues its recruiting efforts to get quality offensive line talent into the pipeline as part of their 2012 recruiting class.
Early this week, we reported on offensive linemen Garrett Adcock, who has an offer from the Black Knights and Georgia native Thomas Pietro, who is hoping for an offer from Army.
One prospect who just pulled down an offer is 3-star center Joseph Scelfo.
"I just got the Army offer two nights ago from Coach Clarence Holmes," shared the 6-foot-2, 275 pound Scelfo when discussing the Black Knights' defensive tackle coach as his recruiting coach.
"He normally calls me like once every two weeks. I wasn't fully expecting it (offer) and then he said that I've got some good news for you. And once he said that I kind of ... well, I was looking for them to offer soon."
And what is Scelfo's level of interest in Army? "I'm very interested," says the enthusiastic center. "I heard that it's a beautiful campus and beautiful place so I'm looking forward to getting up there (West Point)."
Scelfo knows that some may view his 6-foot-2 height as a draw back, but the prospect out of Bogart (GA) North Oconee is not concerned about that, one way or the other.
"Some schools have these big 6'5" - 6'6" guys and averaging 330-350 pounds," he says. "But for example, Boise's center is not that big and I've watched him throughout the Georgia game and I thought he played good.
They got centers in the NFL and Jeff Saturday (Indianapolis Colts) doesn't have that "standard" height."
Clearly, Scelfo does use his height or lack of if you will, as a crutch or an excuse, but on the contrary.
"I would play the same exact way now if I were 6'5"," he adds. "But because I hear from time to about me height, it just makes me play with a chip on my shoulder, honestly."
Scelfo already has several offers, picking up one from the Black Knights moved the the Army squad as one of top programs on Scelfo's schools of strong interest list.
Honored .... straight up honored was my reaction when Coach Holmes offered me ... getting an offer from Army, that means something.
- 2011 center prospect, Joseph Scelfo
"Honored .... Straight up honored was my reaction when Coach Holmes offered me," he declared. "Getting an offer from Army, that means something. They like my character, especially off the field. He said something to me, when he said .... I know you can play on the field, you meet everything we look for off the field here (West Point). I was honored."
And with that, the Georgia native has made sure that if he can't watch the Black Knights on TV, that he does his homework to get an update on Army's performance.
"I think they (Army) look awesome, but I was on a visit when they beat Northwestern on Saturday, so I didn't get a chance to watch them," he shared with GoBlackKnights.com on Wednesday. "I think their line is pretty explosive and something I would want to be a part of."
But before playing at the next level is to occur, there is remains some unfinished high school business for the talented center and his teammates, who currently have a 3-0 record.
Scelfo also plays some packages (5-10 snaps per game) on defense, but center and guard are his primary role for North Oconeel
At the next level, Scelfo seems to be projected more as a Division I center. "I love playing center and being in control," he says. "I think I play hard, stay low with natural leverage. I use that to my advantage, good footwork and use that to my advantage."
Last weekend Scelfo took an unofficial visit to Florida State. "They are looking for me to gray shirt," he states.
GoBlackKnights.com will continue follow Scelfo's senior season and his overall recruiting.
