Maly discusses signing day plans
As far as athletics are concerned, Waunakee (WI) high school is enjoying a rare season. The football team won its second consecutive state championship by capping off an undefeated season and its boys basketball team is currently ranked No. 1 in the state.
Austin Maly, a 2011 UW tight end recruit, was instrumental in the title run and plays a contributory role on the basketball team. BadgerBlitz.com took some time to catch up with Maly.
The following is a question and answer with the local prospect.
First of all, what are your plans for signing day?
Maly: Yeah, Wednesday at 2:30 me and Derek Strauss are going to have a get together. I guess some newspaper guys are going to take some photographs and stuff like that. Everybody will be there around 2:30, all my teammates and stuff like that. It should be a good time.
Obviously you've been committed to Wisconsin for quite a while, but now that the day is finally here what are your emotions?
Maly: Relief. I'm glad to be there and I'm glad they gave me an offer. It was easy and I don't have to be like the other guys who are still worried about where they have to go like some of my friends. It's basically just a relief. I'm glad to be going there and I couldn't be more happy.
Talk about Derek Strauss and the way his commitment kind of came about. That's got to be pretty exciting for him, too.
Maly: Yeah, it's really exciting. He's a really good player. I've always been his teammate and he's just an outstanding player. When he got the offer to walk on he accepted it. I was more than happy for him. I was congratulating him and everything. I couldn't wait to be his teammate again.
You guys have quite the pipeline going from Waunakee to UW.
Maly: Yeah, we're rolling now ever since Jake Irwin.
I see you are playing basketball and it's obvious you guys are off to a pretty good start there. Waunakee's not doing to bad on the sports scene this year.
Maly: Yeah, we're doing alright. We almost lost one last night, but we pulled through. We're undefeated so far. Our girls team is doing alright. Just all around our athletics are doing alright this year.
Are you doing just basketball stuff or are you doing some football cross-training, too?
Maly: I'm doing just basketball right now. I'm doing lifting of course, but it's mostly just basketball and trying to make free throws and stuff like that.
Looking back at your football season, obviously you guys won a state title for your second in a row, but how did it go individually for you?
Maly: I thought it went pretty good actually. I'm happy with the season we had and I had mostly because we won state. I'm not complaining at all. I'm happy with it and have no regrets.
I talked to Jake Keefer and he said he keeps in touch with some fellow recruits. Do you keep in touch with any of your fellow recruits that are about to sign?
Maly: Yeah, I touch base with Sam Arneson
I don't really talk to Melvin Gordon that much but they're all good guys. I can't wait to play with them next year and the years to come.
