Will UConn go after Waugh?
DeVante Waugh already has a couple of scholarship offers so it's not as though the 6-foot-0, 165-pound receiver from Atco (N.J.) Winslow Township is in desperation mode. Besides, he's got plenty of time between now and the time when he has to make his decision.
As a matter of fact, it will probably be quite some time before Waugh decides. He said in a recent interview that he may wait until Signing Day to announce his choice, and plenty can change in the time between now and then.
All that said, Waugh is wondering what has happened with the Huskies. For a good while UConn was showing serious interest but it seems as though the Big East school has taken a step back for whatever reason. Waugh doesn't understand why. Though he hasn't marked UConn off his list he wants to hear from them again soon.
"They were there in the beginning of the process during the season," Waugh said of UConn. "I even went up to see them play Rhode Island last year. After that I just haven't talked to them.
"I used to talk to coach (Randy) Edsall all the time but I haven't talked to them since probably two months ago on Facebook. I've always been interested in UConn but I don't know why they stopped talking to me."
UConn has not offered many scholarships to wide receivers from the Class of 2011, so it appears as though the coaching staff is being pretty selective at that position.
While Waugh has many months until Signing Day and UConn has plenty of time to get involved, the longer the Huskies wait the less likely it is that that anything will ever come of what appeared to be a growing relationship at one point between the staff and Waugh.
Wuagh has offers from Louisville and Rutgers and is highly interested in both schools, so it's not as though he's feeling bad for himself. On the contrary, he's very pleased with the position he finds himself in.
"I'm also hearing from Maryland, Purdue, Pittsburgh and JMU," he pointed out. "And Cincinnati, too."
He went on to say that he plans on trying to visit Cincinnati this summer. It could be difficult, though, because Winslow Township does not let out until a late date, making it difficult to plan a lot.
