Whitehead commits to Mississippi St.
Mississippi State picked up a big time commitment from one of the top cornerback prospects in the state.
Amanda Elzy's Jermaine Whitehead gave his pledge to Melvin Smith become a Bulldog on Wednesday night.
"I just called and told Coach Melvin I was committing," Whitehead said. "He told me that it was a great thing to do and welcomed me to the family. I just felt like Mississippi State was the best place for me."
The six-foot, 183 pounder from Greenwood, Miss., chose MSU over offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Memphis, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Stanford and Tennessee.
Whitehead attended a pair of MSU games this past season against Georgia Tech and Florida.
"The atmosphere down there is crazy," Whitehead said. "I went when they played Georgia Tech and Florida and those two games were wild. I had a lot of fun. I actually know a couple of people that play for them and they said the coaching staff was great this year. I talked to one of the players that plays for Coach Melvin and he said playing cornerback is a lot of fun at State. That's exactly what I want to do, go somewhere and have fun. State is very good to me. I like a lot of schools but I love State."
