Army Signees : Meet Joel Cox & Ryan McCollum
In our post signing day tradition, GoBlackKnights.com continues to take a look the Army Black Knights' 2010 Recruiting Class. Two defenders that will be making their way direct to the West Point campus are defensive tackle Joel Cox and hard hitting linebacker Ryan McCollum.
On Wednesday afternoon at 3pm at the Center Grove High School, Greenwood (Ind.), defensive tackle Joel Cox did all he could to contain himself during his Signing Day Ceremony. The 6-foot-2, 275 pound defensive tackle was joined by his parents, teammates, including three who signed and two female athletes signees. "It was a little emotional for my dad, but they both are pretty excited about my decision," shares Cox, who was introduced by his coach, but also prepared a little speech and thanked the people that assisted him along the way.
All in all, everyone shared the joyous occasion in which he finally inked his future in as a Black Knight.
The direct bound tackle, is looking to come onboard in the 275 pound range and is working hard to Army ready. "I am very excited," said Cox. I have been lifting and running
just ready to get started."
In the conference room of John F. Kennedy High School, Warren (Ohio) at 2pm on Wednesday, McCollum was joined by a large family contingent that included his parents, sister Amber, brother Evan, several friends, assistant coaches, school's Principal and athletic director, along with the President of the school system.
It was a time of reflection and emotion for the direct bound linebacker. All the folks there spoke about how proud they were of McCollum, but the hard hitting linebacker reciprocated the moment by thanking and embellishing those who have been responsible for assisting him in getting to where he is today.
Soon after the ceremony, McCollum reached out to members of the Army coaching staff. "I spoke with Coach Waugh and Coach Smeland called later," shared the Ohio native, who at 6-foot-1, 230 pounds, is working extremely hard to prepare physically for the next level.
"I have a pretty good workout schedule going on. Monday, Wednesday and Friday I'm doing power lifting and getting ready for one of the lifting meets coming up.
Tuesday and Thursday I usually work with some agility stuff in the gym. Saturday I get up to Cleveland to do some ban work
some jump stretch kind of stuff. My goal right now is that I want to gain some weight, but maintain my speed, because I know I will lose some weight during beast."
